Winners of the SXSW Eco Startup Showcase Announced

-Awards-Teaser-300x169_0SXSW Eco announced five winners of its third Startup Showcase during a ceremony at the Austin Convention Center Tuesday night.

Open Water Foundation of Fort Collins, CO., won for Social Impact for a non-profit and Drinkwell of Boston won for Social Impact for profit.

PAX Pure of San Rafeal, Calif. and Picasolar of Fayetteville, AR, tied for the win in the Greentech category.

Lagoon of Cincinnati, OH., won in the Cleanweb category.

SXSW Eco’s 2014 Startup Central programming was produced in conjunction with Austin Energy and the Austin Technology Incubator, part of the IC2 Institute at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Startup Showcase featured 32 companies. Each one gave a four minute pitch, followed by four minutes of questions and answers with a panel of judges. The judges included representatives from Target, Shell Technology Ventures, the Whole Planet Foundation, New Enterprise Associates and Sprint.

Rockets launching are a symbol of Texas’ rich history in the space industry.

Although innovation has become a buzzword in many circles it still rings true in Texas and the neighboring states of Louisiana and Mississippi, which all have NASA facilities.

Space exploration is at that heart of innovation.

First, the nation raced to put astronauts on the Moon. Mission accomplished. Next, NASA built Skylab and then took 10 years and 30 missions to complete the International Space Station. In September, NASA announced a $6.2 billion contact with private companies SpaceX, a startup, and Boeing to shuttle astronauts to the ISS.

And now NASA has sets its sights on taking humans to Mars.

Talk about big ideas. Texas has ideas as big as the state. And that’s evident when you look at the tech startups coming out of Central Texas. They aim to tackle big problems and deliver clever solutions.

The ecosystem of investors, law firms, accountants, public relations firms, accelerators and incubators, banks, universities, government departments, chambers and support agencies all help to make this a strong region for technology and innovation. But it’s the people who make things happen. And in this issue, you’ll meet one of them, Jacqueline Hughes, creator of the Austin Startup Week. And we’ll introduce you to even more people who make up the great tech scene in our next issue.

For now, enjoy these stories of entrepreneurs creating something from nothing and pushing the envelope of innovation.

Without a doubt, the tech industry is white-hot and taking off in Austin and San Antonio. The sky is the limit.

At SXSW Eco: Creating Jet Biofuel from Saltwater Tolerant Plants

imgres-4Saltwater makes up 97 percent of the world’s water and 20 percent of earth’s land mass is arid or desert regions.

Combine the two and create a new kind of biofuel that will be sustainable and cut carbon emissions, said Alejandro Rios Galvan, director the Sustainable Bioenergy Research Consortium at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi.

The institute is focusing on cultivating halophytes, desert plants that can be irrigated with seawater and used as biofuel feedstock to create jet fuel.

In particular, it’s growing Salicornia, a green succulent that produces seeds containing 30 percent oil, which can be refined and used as an alternative to jet fuel, Galvan said.

“We’re going to produce biomass for alternative energy in a sustainable way,” Galvan said. “We’re not feeding into the food versus fuel debate.”

IMG_4028Galvan spoke with Julie Felgar, Boeing Commercial Airlines’ managing director of environment strategy, in an afternoon keynote address at South by Southwest Eco, which kicked off Monday at the Austin Convention Center. SXSW Eco is produced in conjunction with Austin Energy and the Austin Technology Incubator. It runs through Wednesday.

Felgar and Rios discussed the development of sustainable jet fuel and the effort to reduce carbon emissions by 50 percent in coming decades.

“Aviation is expanding around the globe,” Felgar said.

In 1993, 73 percent of all air traffic came from North America and Europe. That has fallen to 50 percent in 2013. And that’s because Asia is booming.

Airlines will need nearly 36,000 new airplanes valued at $5.2 trillion in the coming decades, Felgar said.

Today, about 19,000 airplanes fly globally, but that fleet will almost double within 20 years, Felgar said.

“It comes with some potentially troubling environmental impact if we don’t act now,” she said.

The airline industry contributes 2 percent globally to the world’s carbon emissions, Felgar said. That will grow to 3 percent by 2030, she said. It will not grow more because Boeing and other aircraft makers are creating lighter and more efficient airplanes and they are increasingly focusing on using biofuels to power their aircraft, Felgar said.

By 2020, the aviation industry wants to be carbon neutral and by 2050, it seeks to reduce emissions by 50 percent, Felgar said.

Boeing wants to expand biofuel supply to 1 percent of jet fuel demand by 2015, Felgar said.

“The problem is supply,” she said. “The refining capacity is very small right now.”

And it’s expensive. It used to cost $30 a gallon for jet biofuel and that’s dropped substantially, but it’s still expensive, she said.

Today, many feedstocks will provide biofuel including oils and biomass, plant sugars and other sources like algae and municipal solid waste.

The move to jet biofuel has to be a global movement, Felgar said.

“We can’t just do this in the U.S.,” she said.

That’s where the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in the United Arab Emirates comes in. It’s launching a pilot project to cultivate and produce biofuel from Salicornia, Galvan said. And if that test is successful, it will look at commercialization.

Texas Startups Need to Apply for SBIR Grants

A few weeks ago, the Small Business Innovation Research program announced its Fall National SBIR/STTR Conference on Nov. 11-13 in Austin.

The conferences are generally sold out but registration numbers were really low for this one, said Robert Allen Baker, SBIR Policy and program analyst.

“We always do these conferences in Washington, D.C.,” he said.

So Baker investigated how many Phase I and Phase II SBIR awards went to Texas companies since 2009 and was shocked.

“Only 230 odd awards – way lower than we expected,” Baker said. “And only 51 companies. And seven companies won 63 percent of the Phase I awards.”

His conclusion: SBIR is doing something profoundly wrong in Texas.

Other states like Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland and California, they each received thousands of Phase I and Phase II SBIR awards during the same time period, Baker said.

SBIR is a national program, coordinated by the Small Business Administration, in which 11 federal agencies award $2.3 billion in research and development grants to small businesses. The Department of Defense is the largest agency. Small Business Technology Transfer, known as STTR, is another program that awards grants to small businesses.

On Sunday night, Baker met with about 25 technology leaders from Austin in the home of Roy and Dale Truitt for drinks and appetizers and to hear a presentation from Baker on “Commercialization in the Innovation Ecosystem: SBIR and its role in delivering innovation.” The Small Business Development Center Network at Texas State University arranged the event.

Austin looks like an emerging Silicon Valley, Baker said. And the city has more tools now than ever before to develop the tech ecosystem here, he said.

“Forty years ago in the valley, we didn’t have an SBIR program,” he said. “SBIR has changed the landscape tremendously. It’s not a competitor to the Venture Capital industry, it’s complementary.”

Right now, angel investors fund the majority of U.S. startups, Baker said. In 2013, they invested $24.8 billion in 70,730 deals to more than 268,000 individuals, according to stats from PwC Money Tree. Venture Capital funds just 2,099 deals worth $20.7 billion in 522 firms. The mean angel round is less than $1 million.

A startup can still get angel or VC investment and an SBIR grant, Baker said.

“There’s nothing else like this supporting innovation,” Baker said.

Some of the Austin companies, which have received SBIR grants, include Spot on Sciences with $1.8 million from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Spot on Sciences makes an easy to use blood sample kit. Lynx Labs, a spin out of from the University of Texas, has also received an SBIR grant. The company makes a camera with specialized software that can capture 3-D environment.

SBIR/STTR grants are a three phase competitive program, Baker said. In Phase I, companies get up to $150,000 and Phase II they can get up to $1 million for a two year award. In the last phase, the program focuses on commercialization and funding comes from the private sector or government agency or both, Baker said.

The Department of Defense also has a Rapid Innovation Fund, Baker said. It can award up to $3 million for a two-year award to a company that creates a product to satisfy an operational or national security need.

Innotech Austin’s Beta Summit is Back

The event will take place in Room 8AB at 11 a.m. on Oct. 15th at the Austin Convention Center. Bryan Menell, managing editor of Austinstartup.com is the host.

Burpy – A University of Texas Longhorn Startup company formed by five undergraduate students. The grocery delivery company is available in Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. It recently graduated from the Techstars Austin program.

Clarify.io – The company recently rebraded from OP3NVoice. It has created an API media search platform. Its technology allows people to search through video and audio files easily using keywords. The startup is backed by Projector Capital and angel investment. It is an alumnus of the Techstars London program, Fintech Innovation lab and the BBC Media Lab.

Patient IO – The patient portal allows doctors and other caregivers to put information about the patient’s treatment online, including doctor recommended homework and medicine and deliver it to the patient’s smartphone. The company, previosuly known as Filament Labs, was part of the inaugural Techstars class in 2013. It has raised about $1.2 million to date.

Pingboard – Launched in January, this startup focuses on creating an office management platform for small to medium sized businesses. It has raised $1.25 million from Silverton Partners and local angel investors. Pingboard spun out of Capital Thought, an incubator founded by Bill Boebel, Joshua Baer, co-founder of Capital Factory and Jason Cohen, cofounder of Capital Factory and founder of WP Engine. The company has created a company directory, vacation calendar and employee database platform.

Thread – A recently launched online dating service for college students at the University of Texas at Austin. Zach Dell founded the site and Lander Coronado-Garcia serves as its CEO. The company plans to expand to other colleges.

WingUp – “WingUp’s mobile app makes business travel more productive, efficient and enjoyable by connecting travelers with who they know, could know or should know, wherever they are.”

Datafiniti Releases New Version of 80legs Web Crawler

imgres-2Datafiniti, a data search engine, relaunched 80legs, a service platform for web crawling and processing web content.

The Austin-based startup reports that the “relaunch makes 80legs simpler and easier to use, complete with a new back-end design that helps the platform crawl with increased power, speed, and reliability.”

The new features for 80legs include the ability to crawl an unlimited number of URLs a month to meet user demands and auto-scales crawls to eliminate delays in processing jobs. The new version increases the time it takes to crawl a website by ten times.

imgresDatafiniti took over 80legs last year. The platform’s users include Acxiom, HP, Integral Ads and others “for reviews management, competitive intelligence, social media monitoring, ad and pricing optimization, fraud detection, predictive modeling and more,” according to a news release. “MailChimp uses 80legs to capture email address on every website for spam prevention, and PayPal uses 80legs to identify fraudulent uses of their platform.”

AdBm Technologies Lands $1.3 Million in Funding from CTAN and Others

adbm-logo-200x114AdBm Technologies closed on $1.3 million in funding led by the Central Texas Angel Network.

Other investors included Green Park & Golf Ventures as well as the Houston Angel Network and the North Texas Angel Network.

“AdBm, a portfolio company of the Austin Technology Incubator’s Clean Energy Incubator, also recently announced a successful test of its product in the German North Sea with underwater noise reduction of almost 40 decibels, exceeding performance expectations,” according to a news release.

The startup, founded in 2013 at the University of Texas at Austin, created an affordable underwater noise abatement system with applications in the offshore wind, energy and marine construction industries.

“The AdBm technology is much more effective acoustically and considerably faster to install that other alternatives, while also safer and more economical,” according to its news release.

AdBm plans to use the money raised in its Series A round to scale its production and manufacture its first commercial scale systems. The company has a pipeline of more than 30 sales projects worth more than $55 million.

“We can now take our commercialized solutions and work aggressively to get them into the market to simplify and improve the installation of offshore wind projects,” Mark Wochner, PhD, CEO of AdBm Technologies said in a news release.

StackEngine Launches in Austin and Raises $1 Million in Funding

StackEngine_Lo_FF1-e1398284107204StackEngine, a platform for Docker apps, announced it has raised $1 million in seed funding from Silverton Partners and LiveOak Venture Partners.

The Austin-based startup is still testing its products privately and plans to make it publicly available later this year.

“Developers are rapidly adopting Docker’s new approach and, in turn, organizations are desperately seeking tools and best practices to help them quickly and simply launch Docker-developed products and services,” according to a news release. “All of this has created an operations bottleneck, which StackEngine is aggressively attacking.”

Bob Quillin and Eric Anderson, formerly of CopperEgg, Hyper9 and VMware, founded the company.

“We deeply believe that automation is the answer to an emergent problem in Docker and container technologies,” StackEngine CEO and Co-founder Bob Quillin said in a news statement. “We also believe a new and radically different approach is needed. Containerization instantly shifts the problem up the stack. StackEngine bridges that gap and gives enterprises the ability to deliver product faster, deploy more frequently, operate more reliably and run wherever is most optimal.”

StackEngine’s software management tools are needed, he said.

“We believe that StackEngine has identified a key pain point with a compelling new technology,” Kip McClanahan, Partner, Silverton Partners, said in a news release. “StackEngine is entering this emerging market at its flash point. While Docker looks to be the heir apparent to VMware, it lacks the requisite operations management and automation tools to break into the enterprise. That’s why we bet on the experience of the StackEngine team to lead the way forward.”
