Background: SiliconHillsNews is a start-up technology news site covering the Austin and San Antonio region, known as Silicon Hills.
We write stories about entrepreneurs, companies, technology events and issues, and creative people.
My name is Laura Lorek, and I started Silicon Hills News after winning one of four $12,000 awards in the J-Lab and McCormick Foundation’s New Media Women Entrepreneur 2011 program. That grant provided the seed funding to launch.
Covering technology in Central Texas is our focus. And we’ve been doing it for a long time.
Before launching Silicon Hills News, I was a senior writer at the San Antonio Express News, covering high-tech and business news stories.
But now, my entire focus is making Silicon Hills News the best tech news site in Central Texas. We recently celebrated our 10th anniversary. We’ve accomplished much quicker, including growing our readership and publishing a print magazine funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign. And calendars for Austin and San Antonio were supported by a successful Kickstarter campaign. They launched the Ideas to Invoices podcast, which has over 80 episodes and was funded by another successful Kickstarter campaign. Everything we do has been boot-strapped and fueled by grassroots support and funding. If you care about quality, local news, and funding a business that provides valuable information to readers, then partner with us. We don’t receive funding from any other source but our readers and advertisers.
